By default the Pollstar100 Service supplies the client with ratings information in floating-point form in the range of 0
to 1. The rating is calculated as a simple weighted average of all the votes across the entire range of defined rating categories (ie: every record in the Sample Data items set). Thus, a rating of zero would imply that all received votes were cast against the first record in the Sample Data items set. Similarly, a rating of one would imply that all received votes were cast against the last record in the Sample Data items set. In this respect then, it should be noted that the ratings value is a purely quantitative term; the system has no qualitative notion of 'good' or 'bad'. In view of this fact, those designers wishing to adhere strictly to the 'numbers' should therefore arrange their ratings categories within the Sample Data file in a way that reflects this underlying mechanism. For example, a designer wishing zero to mean 'worst' should define the 'worst' category as the first record in the Sample Data set and so on.

Alternatively, the Descriptions
Property affords designers a more sophisticated means with which to provide qualitative, custom non-numeric ratings descriptions. The Descriptions Property may be assigned a comma-separated list of ratings descriptions of arbitrary length. The raw ratings value returned by the Pollstar100 Service is mapped to the list of descriptions such that the first description in the list equates to zero and the last in the list equates to one. Note that there is no requirement for the items in the ratings descriptions list to correspond in any way to the ratings categories defined in the Sample Data items set. Any such correspondence is purely a design issue.
